What should Hudson homeowners know about siding?
Hudson pairs an older river-town core, with homes from many different eras near downtown and the St. Croix, with large newer subdivisions on the hills and outskirts built mostly from the 1990s on. That means we see both original wood lap that has been painted many times and builder-grade vinyl that is now fading and loosening.
Bluffs, river exposure, and open hilltop lots put real wind on certain elevations. Walls facing the prevailing wind or the river valley tend to show loose courses and failed seams sooner, while walls under tree cover near the bluffs stay damp and grow algae.
Wisconsin has its own licensing and permitting process, separate from Minnesota. We confirm the permit requirements with the City of Hudson or your township before work starts and pull whatever is required.
What siding costs in Hudson, WI (2026)
All prices are per square, with one square equal to 100 square feet of finished wall, and they include removing and hauling away the old siding. Hudson's mix of older homes and larger newer builds spreads across all four brackets below.
These are Midwest Building Exteriors' own current 2026 installed prices, confirmed directly by owner Christian Musta: vinyl $900–$950 per square; LP SmartSide and fiber cement $1,200–$1,300 per square depending on finish; and steel $1,300–$1,500 per square (about $13–$15 per sq. ft.), dependent on various factors. One siding square equals 100 square feet of wall.
| Wall area | Vinyl ($900–$950/sq) | LP SmartSide ($1,200–$1,300/sq) | Fiber cement ($1,200–$1,300/sq) | Steel ($1,300–$1,500/sq) |

- Vinyl ($900–$950/sq)
- Usually Exterior Portfolio Market Square at .44 mil. A low-upkeep, cost-conscious option for townhomes and smaller homes.
- LP SmartSide ($1,200–$1,300/sq)
- Our preferred default for the freeze-thaw winters of the St. Croix Valley. Engineered wood with a crisp lap profile and dependable fastener hold.
- Fiber cement ($1,200–$1,300/sq)
- Offered when requested, priced like LP. Dense and fire-resistant, with exacting installation requirements explained further down.
- Steel ($1,300–$1,500/sq)
- Christian's confirmed installed price is $1,300–$1,500 per square, about $13–$15 per square foot, depending on job factors. A good match for to windy, exposed walls.
Line items that move a Hudson number
- Insulated siding as an optional add-on+$150 – $300 per square
- Damaged sheathing replaced after the old siding comes off+$85 – $160 per sheet
- Kickout and step flashing fixed where roof meets wall+$350 – $900 per location
- Head flashing and trim cladding over each opening+$45 – $120 per opening
- House wrap over any exposed sheathing+$60 – $110 per square
- Masonry-to-siding transition trimquoted per elevation
- Single-elevation or partial repairquoted per job, no minimum
Ranges are installed totals in 2026 dollars — removal and disposal of the existing siding, house wrap, flashing and kickout details, trim, fasteners, permit, and cleanup included. They are planning numbers, not a quote. Wall area, number of stories, trim and gable complexity, window count, sheathing repair, and color availability all move the final figure. Repairs and partial-wall work are quoted on their own; there is no job-size minimum.
Which siding material fits a Hudson home?
We install all four systems below and do not favor a house brand. Here is how each one performs on the wind-exposed and river-valley walls we work on around Hudson.
| Material | Life in MN | Installed / square | Install time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vinyl (Exterior Portfolio Market Square, .44 mil)A value choice that never needs paint. The thicker panel holds up better in wind than thin builder vinyl, and we also install comparable lines. | 20–40 years | $900 – $950 | 3–5 days |
| LP SmartSide engineered woodA natural fit when painted wood lap is coming off an older home. Real wood-grain look, solid fastening, and good tolerance for cold-weather cycling. | 30–50 years | $1,200 – $1,300 | 3–5 days |
| Fiber cementStrong and non-combustible, installed when requested. Results depend on precise clearances, flashing, and joint treatment. | 40–50+ years | $1,200 – $1,300 | 3–5 days |
| SteelRigid and rot-free on windy hilltop and bluff lots. Hail can still dimple the panels. | 40–50+ years | $1,300 – $1,500 | 4–5 days |
Why we default to LP SmartSide — and what the research actually says
This describes fiber cement as a class of product. Because the board is built from a porous cement mix, it reacts to winter: researchers publishing in a peer-reviewed materials journal measured structural and flexural change after many freeze-thaw rounds (Gorzelańczyk & Schabowicz, Materials journal, 2019, retrieved 2026-09-16). The St. Croix Valley sees no shortage of those rounds.
Moisture studies say the same. Building Science Corporation's long-term Vancouver hut experiment on fiber-cement walls found the space behind the boards, and whether water can escape it, mattered more than the boards themselves (BSC Research Report RR-1306, retrieved 2026-09-16). InspectAPedia's case files on gapping seams and failed sealant blame skipped clearances and poor flashing (InspectAPedia field reports, retrieved 2026-09-16). That is why we personally favor LP SmartSide in this climate, and why a fiber-cement install from us sticks to the maker's written directions line by line.
Is steel siding storm-proof?
Steel will not burn, rot or warp, which is real value on a windy bluff. Hail still leaves dimples in it, and adjusters usually start their inspection at the dented gutters. Pick it for lifespan and easy care, never on the idea that it cancels hail risk.
Does your Hudson association have to approve the color?
Hudson-area townhome boards and subdivision committees frequently sign off on exterior colors before work begins. Our part is to show up with real product swatches, shoot daylight photos of the building, and write a short submittal naming product, color and trim so the board can vote once.
When a palette names a shade that is out of production, we look for the closest color still on the market and call it out in writing as a proposed swap.
Multi-building properties can be staged under a single contract. See townhome and HOA siding and our commercial siding page.
- Real swatches checked against the building in daylight
- Short written submittal for the board vote
- Written proposal for any out-of-production color
- Staged schedule under one contract
Siding work from our crews

Do you repair siding in Hudson, or only replace it?
Both, and size does not matter to us. A river-facing wall that keeps shedding courses, a broken corner board, or a section opened up to reach a leak behind the siding gets priced by itself.
On older siding, color drift sets the limit. Where a fresh panel would look obviously newer, we raise that before you sign and offer a price for redoing the full side.
Insulated underlayment is available on any job and shows up as its own line.
Who else does siding work in Hudson?
Hudson homeowners often get siding bids from Twin Cities contractors who cross the river as well as from local Wisconsin firms. The table below covers the Minnesota-based siding companies most often quoted beside us, using their Minnesota state license records. A Minnesota license does not by itself authorize work in Wisconsin, so ask any contractor for their Wisconsin credential too. Ours is WI License #DC-0523005.
This is a factual reference, not a ranking. Each record appears exactly as the state lists it, gaps are marked as unverified, and leave the decision to you.

- Craftsman's Choice — License BC384780 was listed as Issued through March 31, 2027, at 5680 Quam Ave NE, Ste A, St Michael, MN 55376 in the Minnesota DLI residential contractor export retrieved September 16, 2026. The export's enforcement-action field is marked, but the export provides no action type, date, outcome, case number, or order text; we therefore make no claim about what occurred. DLI's enforcement materials state, ‘A Consent Order is not a finding of fact or admission of guilt.’ The export does not establish whether this flag relates to a Consent Order. Verify the current license and any enforcement information directly at dli.mn.gov.
- Super Siders — Licensed and active with no enforcement flag on the export. Long-standing license, originally issued 2008. Their own marketing claims about years in business and families served are self-reported and we have not verified them.
- Minnesota Exteriors Inc — Licensed and active with no enforcement flag, and one of the oldest license records in the export — originally issued January 1992. A separate entity, Minnesota Exteriors Commercial LLC (BC741401), holds its own active license for commercial work.
- Twin Cities Siding & Roofing — Licensed and active with no enforcement flag. Note the operating entity name differs from the trade name — worth checking that the contract you are handed names the licensed entity.
- TWS Remodeling — Licensed and active with no enforcement flag. An earlier, similarly named license (BC283598, Window Store LLC The) shows as voluntarily terminated — the current active record is the one above.
- Garrett Construction — Licensed and active with no enforcement flag; the license number published on their own site matches the state record. The license was originally issued in August 2021, which is worth weighing against marketing that cites a longer operating history.
- Anchor Roofing & Exteriors — Licensed and active with no enforcement flag. As with several on this list, the licensed entity name differs from the trade name you see on the truck.
License numbers, status, expiry, and addresses below are taken from the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry residential contractor license export, retrieved 2026-09-16. License status and enforcement flags change — confirm current status yourself at dli.mn.gov before you sign anything with anyone, including us. BBB accreditation and rating are shown as unverified because we could not retrieve BBB's own published listings at the time of writing; we would rather label that gap than repeat a number we have not read at the source.
Hudson siding questions
- How much does siding cost in Hudson, WI?
- Vinyl is $900 to $950 per square (100 square feet), LP SmartSide and fiber cement are $1,200 to $1,300, and steel is $1,300 to $1,500. A typical 19 to 25 square Hudson home runs about $17,100 to $23,750 in vinyl or $22,800 to $32,500 in LP SmartSide or fiber cement.
- Are you licensed to do siding work in Wisconsin?
- Yes. We work in Wisconsin under WI License #DC-0523005, and Hudson projects are run from our St. Croix Falls office.
- How long does a Hudson siding replacement take?
- Three to five days for vinyl, LP SmartSide, or fiber cement, and four to five days for steel. Weather, approvals, and hidden sheathing damage can affect timing.
- Who handles the permit for a Hudson siding job?
- We do. Wisconsin permitting is separate from Minnesota, so we confirm the requirements for your address with the local building department and pull whatever is needed.
- Is steel siding hail-proof?
- It is not. Steel holds its shape and never rots, yet a hailstone can still dimple it. Choose it for durability and easy care rather than storm immunity.
- Can you repair just one wall?
- Yes, and there is no minimum order. When a fresh panel would look obviously newer than the faded wall beside it, we raise that up front and offer a price for the whole side.
- Do you help with association color approval?
- We do. Boards get real swatches, current photos and a written submittal from us, along with a clearly marked proposal if any palette color is no longer produced.
- What happens if storm damage is part of the job?
- We photograph and log the damage, then hand that record to your own insurance adjuster. We handle the repair; we do not act as your public adjuster.
