When should you replace windows in Minnesota?
Replace your windows when you feel a draft with the sash closed, see fog or condensation trapped between the panes, or the sash no longer stays where you put it. Fogging means the insulating gas seal has failed, and once that happens the window's R-value is gone — no repair restores it.
In an older Twin Cities home, single-pane or early double-pane windows are usually the largest source of winter heat loss after the attic.
- Condensation or haze between the glass panes
- Cold air you can feel along the sash on a January day
- Frost forming on the interior glass or frame
- Windows painted or swollen shut — an egress safety issue in bedrooms
- Rotting wood sills or peeling interior trim paint
- Outside noise that got noticeably worse over the years
